KOLKATA: An elderly man Arabinda De and his 44-year-old son Partha were found living with the body of another family member and the carcasses of their pet dogs for over six months in their 3, Robinson Street home.
The incident came to light on Wednesday night when the Shakespeare Sarani police recovered the charred body of 77-year-old Arabinda De after breaking the door of the bathroom. De had immolated himself. Later, a suicide note was found in which he had written that no one was responsible for his death.
“We recovered Arabinda’s charred body from the house. Since it was a case of unnatural death, we posted two constables outside the house. They found his son Partha behaving suspiciously. We later interrogated him during which he told us that the skeleton of his sister Debjani, who died nearly six months earlier, was in the house. Partha told us that Debjani had said there was some evil spirit on their house and she started fasting to ward off the evil and please the Gods. She fasted for over a month and died on December 29, 2015,” said Muralidhar, DC (south).
Partha was inside the flat when his father burnt himself to death and still he did not try to save him or raise an alarm. After Debjani’s death, Partha kept her body in his bedroom wrapped in sheets along with the carcasses of their pet dogs.
