Hyderabad: Turn points at seven major junctions are being closed down by the traffic police in a bid to ease vehicular congestion. Among the junctions which have been closed on a trial basis are at Rasoolpura, Madina, Road No. 78 Jubilee Hills, Toli Chowki (Galaxy) and Prakashnagar.

The traffic police expects to close 20 more junctions in due course. Neeru's junction in Jubilee Hills and the Tarnaka junction will also be taken up soon for closure. Closing a junction would mean barricading the turn point and converting it into a straight road. This reduces the number of traffic interruptions.

“We closed turn points at a couple of places successfully and will taking up at least 20 more junctions for closure,” said additional commissioner of police (traffic) Jitender.

He said junctions on the entire stretch from SR Nagar up to Miyapur had been closed, including at JNTU. “This has brought down the travel time from 25-30 minutes to just 10 minutes on the 7 to 8 km stretch as congestion has come down significantly,” Mr Jitender said.

“Allowing right turns slows down traffic movement significantly, hence the right turns will be closed down. People can take the left turns and U-turns,” he said.
