SHIVAMOGGA: A 24-year-old woman hanged herself at the residence of her relative at Vidyanagar in the city early on Tuesday morning, over alleged harassment by her in-laws. The deceased, Rekha, was a resident of Kachinakatte near Shivamogga. After her death, her parents and relatives ransacked the house of her father-in-law Puttappa at Gopala Extension, set ablaze a motorbike and smashed household items.

They also assaulted Rekha’s father-in-law and mother-in-law, who have been admitted to a hospital. The police said that Rekha got married to Adarsh, an employee in the Axis Bank in Bengaluru, in April last year. She stayed with her husband in Bengaluru for a few months, but moved to her relative’s house in Shivamogga last month. She filed a complaint with the women’s police station, alleging that her husband and his family members harassed her frequently for dowry.

SP Ravi.D. Channannavar said that a dowry death case has been registered after Rekha’s death. The police have initiated the investigation and culprits will be brought to justice, he said. Ransacking the house after the death of the woman was not fair, and nobody has been arrested so far in connection with this case. The investigations are continuing, he said.
