Chennai: Pregnant woman fatally knocked down by vehicle
The woman was eight months pregnant, police said
Chennai: A 22-year-old pregnant woman was killed in a case of hit-and-run by an unidentified vehicle on Kamarajar Salai near Marina beach. R. Devika of Vadavandai street, Kundrathur, was riding pillion while her husband, Ramesh, was riding the two-wheeler. The woman was eight months pregnant, police said. Around 7.50 pm on Tuesday, the two of them were moving towards lighthouse when an unidentified car hit them from behind.
“The incident happened near Marina swimming pool and both the occupants were thrown to the ground. The car fled the scene without stopping,” said a police officer. While Ramesh sustained minor injuries, the woman suffered grievous injuries and was moved to the RGGGH. She succumbed to her injuries around 1 am on Wednesday.
The Anna square traffic investigation wings registered a case and are investigating. “Neither the woman’s husband nor the eyewitnesses noted down the registration number of the car. We will be checking the CCTV cameras along the route to find the car’s identity,” said a cop.
