CHENNAI: Chennai based iconic saree brand Nalli  has initiated legal action against e-commerce major Snapdeal.com for misusing the company’s registered trade mark and images on the latter’s website. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Nalli said they have issued a cease  and desist notice on June 11 through their lawyers.

“The notice is to make Snapdeal immediately cease and desist using their trademark  Nalli as their search criteria or in any other manner and to remove  all photographic images of Nalli,” the statement said.

On Friday Nalli while undertaking a Google search for “nalli.com”   noticed that Snapdeal, has misused their registered trademark “NALLI” as well as copied the photographic images from Nalli’s website. The  company alleged that while clicking on the link, it directly leads to  Snapdeal’s clothing segment, more specifically the online sale of silk sarees where Nalli products and images from the company’s website nalli.com have been dishonestly used.

“Nalli Chinnasami Chetty are the registered owners of the trademark  “Nalli” which is registered, the company said. Nalli alleged that it was a deliberate attempt by Snapdeal to deceive the public to unjustly enrich itself to make the public assume that the original “Nalli” silk sarees were available on their website.

“Online sale of Nalli products is done exclusively through our website  “nalli.com”, and nowhere else,” Nalli said. Responding on this issue, a spokesperson from Snapdeal said that they have received the notice from the company and will take appropriate action as per law. Nalli was established in 1928 and has retail outlets in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, apart from Chennai.
