Chennai: A fun dip with friends in a pond at an abandoned farmland in Rajakilpakkam near Tambaram turned fatal for an eleven-year-old boy on Saturday morning.The group of four boys visited the surface pond, as they had no school today. All of them are students of Government Middle School in Selayur, police said.

Vijay and Krishna were swimming in the pond when Abilash, a sixth class boy who was sitting on the bank slipped into the pond. Investigations revealed that Abilash did not know swimming and was using a thermacol when he slipped and fell. His friends made a futile attempt to rescue him, but failed after which they alerted the locals of nearby village.

After a search of an hour, Abilash’s body was rescued from the pond. His mother, N. Uma, a domestic help was alerted and the bereaved mother rushed to the scene. Police said that Uma was away at work early in the morning. Abilash is the youngest of her three sons. Selayur Police registered a case and moved the body to Chromepet Government Hospital for post -mortem.
