Chennai: Poll bound R.K. Nagar came to a standstill on Monday evening as Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa campaigned in the lo-wer middle class and subaltern rich north Chennai constituency. Co-mmuters and motorists were found arguing with cops over traffic remaining frozen for almost 3 hours from 5.30 pm in large parts of R K
Nagar owing to security cordon.
Police instructed commuters to kill the engines and wait in the middle of the road for over an hour with many places sealed all lanes leading to the CM’s route from Parry’s to Power House.
Even an intrepid commuter familiar with north Chennai’s topography could not find his way out of the traffic logjam. Near Power House Bridge, a special pooja was performed and the bells of the Amman Temple kept chiming just about the time the CM’s motorcade crossed the spot. The cops did not open the traffic till 9.10 pm.
One of the onlookers there, Ayyanar, said; “I have been waiting for over an hour now. I am tired. At least let me grab the opportunity to catch a glimpse of her.”
Clerk Sharada Murugesan of Tondiarpet who was stranded in a bus stop after failing to board an overcrowded one, said, “It is 8.45 pm already. It looks like vehicle will only move by inches. I wonder when I will reach home and start cooking.” Even this reporter could not reach Tondiarpet from Parry’s in less than two hours.
