Telangana to revise school staff

Hyderabad: Facing criticism for allotting just one teacher to state-run primary schools with less than 30 students, the Telangana government has decided to revise the staffing pattern after it found that the scheme was based on faulty numbers.

The government had stated that the earlier decision was necessitated by the lack of staff. It has now found that 7,000 teachers would be rendered jobless if it was implemented.

Clearly, the staff strength and requirements were not calculated while framing the rules; officials thought of it only afterwards.

Also, the earlier decision would have resulted in the state having 7,000 one-teacher schools.

Now, sources stated, the staffing pattern is expected to be revised to two teachers for primary schools having less than 20 children.

“If only one teacher is allotted to primary schools with fewer than 30 students, many of the currently working teachers would become excess to requirements. The new rules are expected to come out on Thursday,” TS school education department sources said.

How many teachers would become excess is still being worked out by the authorities. Another official in the education department said, “This would be a situation in some districts, not all over the state. The Deputy Chief Minister wants to change the rule now.”
