Kozhikode: The Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Madapally, has found an innovative solution for the textbooks delay for the academic year 2015- 16. The school has launched an exclusive audio textbook named ‘Vaikhari’  for Malayalam subject for class X students.

It is the result of a month-long effort made by the National Service Scheme team of the school and  has all the details of the Malayalam textbook, including   dramatic description of stories, poems and other chapters, as per the State Council of Educational Research and Training syllabus.

Former NSS programme officer K.M. Prasanth, the brain behind the project,  said, “the audio textbook can help the students learn the subject, instead of  merely listening to the teachers, especially of the language classes.”

Audio books have been used in other countries by teachers of second-language learners, learning-disabled or impaired students and struggling readers. In many cases, the audio books have enabled the students to access literature and enjoy books. “We are planning to introduce audio textbooks for other subjects also after our proposal sent to the district panchayat  office is approved,” said  team member and GVHSS faculty P.T. Viji.
