Chennai: Several private engineering colleges in the state have urged the state government to fix fees according to their infrastructure rather than the present system of a common fee structure for all colleges. Head of a private engineering college on the outskirts of the city said the present fee structure had a few shortcomings like common fees for all colleges irrespective of their year of inception and quality of infrastructure.

“There has been a demand for fixing differential fee structure for a long time, but the state fees committee has been fixing fees common for all colleges. This year, too, we have asked the state government but we are not certain whether it will happen this year,” the chairman said.

Another administrator of a private engineering college recalled that AICTE had constituted a committee with Justice B.S. Srikrishna to explore possibilities of fixing common fees for engineering colleges.“The committee is still working on it so they are yet to submit their recommendations. We need to wait and see what they suggest,” the administrator said. Asked about the colleges’ demands, Anna University sources said as it involves a policy decision only the state government can take.
