Hyderabad: Emojis are slowly becoming an integral part of our lives. Originally a Japanese word, emoji literally means picture character. Emojis, a visual form of communication of character images, have become incredibly popular among the current tech-savvy generation.
According to a survey conducted by a mobile company, 72 per cent of the people in the age bracket of 18-25 express themselves better through emojis than the traditional written form.
Emojis can help convey much in a simple character. Especially when it comes to a work environment, where often a smiley emoji can take the edge off an otherwise serious message.
Emojis have also found their space in the marketing world with automobile company Chevrolet releasing a press statement containing only emojis to make the announcement of a car model. But Chevrolet’s press release isn’t a one-off case. US-Based review site Yelp allows customers to search for local businesses using emojis. Domino’s pizza customers in the US, who have registered online, can now order pizza by tweeting emojis of pizza.
Languages have evolved over time and in the age of technology, emojis are gaining more ground as an easier and fun way of conversing. The simpler version of emojis, emoticons were formed from punctuation marks that resembled various emotions.
Emoticons being a combination of punctuation marks meant more typing whereas emojis need only a single type and is the animated form of the emoticons, hence, being a more appealing and cuter form of conversation. Most media platforms and phones now automatically convert emoticons to emojis.
Emojis have always been an extension of written forms but with time, more and more people are using more emojis to convey messages, but it is unlikely that it’ll become a means of communication by themselves. Various forms of communication have come and gone in the digital age with the tech-savvy generation moving on to savvier forms, but it remains to be seen if emojis will survive the test of time.
