Cops suspect parents’ and teachers’ scoldings for girl’s decision

Salem: A class IX student of a government school, who was staying in a model school hostel, hanged herself to death in her hostel room on Friday. Police suspect that she had ended her life as her teachers and mother scolded her for skipping classes in her school.

The 14-year-old girl, Priyadarshini, was admitted to the government school at Chinnappatti only on Thursday after she failed in Class IX in the government school at Sankagiri. She was given accommodation in the government model school hostel.

On Friday morning, when Priyadarshini went to school, she left her school bag in the classroom and went along with another school girl to a nearby shop to buy a pen. When she returned, the classes had already started and she was too scared to go into the classroom late.

So, she and the other girl, waited outside the shop till the lunch break. When she came to the classes after lunch recess, the class teacher Swetha scolded Priyadarshini for skipping classes on the first day of the school. She took Priyadarshini to the principal. Kirubakaran who also chided Priyadarshini.

Later, the school principal informed her mother. Uma, who called up her daughter and rebuked her.

Depressed over the incident, Priaydarshini went into the hostel room on the second floor and hanged herself by her dupatta. However, her relatives claimed that her death was mysterious and demanded a probe into the incident.

Her mother, who worked as a daily wage labourer, was struggling hard to fund the education of her two children including Priyadarshini after her husband abandoned her.

Her mother claimed that there were injury marks on her daughter’s body and demanded an investigation into her death. She refused to receive the body of her daughter. However, the police persuaded her to receive the body and assured that a fair probe would be conducted into the death.
