Monica Dogra, the actress and elctronica musician put out a call to action along with a video- seeking “crowd source” funds for a project that will strike at the heart of Section 377. The act makes homosexuality illegal in India. Her appeal asks viewers to donate Rs 50 lakhs for the project. She explained that is for legislators all over the world to decriminalize all consensual acts of sex and gender identification.
The project titled 'Shiver' is meant to be a catalyst for dialogue within communities that are usually exclusive in their tastes and reach. For Monica, this is an opportunity to stand at the leading edge of the social justice movement, if these communities come together to become that tsunami of change. And there began instead a tsunami of questions and criticism that Dogra, much like the other artists of the "indie scene", was ill-equipped to handle.
One respondent expressed that she lacks the understanding of transgender community. The comment read, “I find your language extremely problematic and revealing a lack of understanding of trans communities, the very communities you claim you are trying to support with this video,” . Another comment read, “Thanks for wanting to support, but would be fabulous if the money you were raising was actually being used by the community for something they needed rather than a music video! I am glad you are an ally, but as an ally maybe some more in depth conversation with the people you want to support.”
