Kozhikode: The Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL) has started operating the hi-tech sewage treatment plant after a public outcry against the poor sanitation facilities  for the labourers at the airport site.

The locals almost clashed with the airport officials the other day   after finding that the septic tank of the labour camps was not properly covered. The locals also alleged that the human waste mixed with  rain water reached the residential areas nearby, posing health  risk.

KIAL corporate affairs manager T. Ajaya Kumar told that the treatment plant lacked the required capacity. “Since the locals have raised the issue of hygiene risk, we have decided to operate  it,” he said. The labourers were shifted to another camp used by the runway workers, where the work has been halted due to rain. Nearly 1,500 labourers are working at the site.

District Collector P. Bala Kiran said that the district administration had directed the health department to take action.
