Hyderabad: Sunday was all about rainbow flags as the US celebrated the annual gay pride march especially with the US Supreme court’s landmark ruling that same-sex couples have the right to get married in the United States. Facebook offered its users a way to change their profile pictures into tints of the rainbow colour to show their support for the LGBT community.

People from different parts of the world including celebrities offered their solidarity with rainbow-coloured profile pictures on social media.
Interestingly, in our own circles, most friends’ lists reveal that it is women who expressed more support to the LGBT community through rainbow-coloured profile pictures and posts as opposed to men.  Lakshmi R. Nair, an IT employee who participated in the Chennai pride march, says, “The reason is that women are not as rigid as men and are more receptive to changes. Also, women are usually more comfortable around the LGBT community while most men feel uneasy.”

Navadeep, an activist of the Hyderabad LGBT community, who also participated in the  march, agreed, “Women are sensible, vocal and more expressive when it comes to issues like this. They don’t jump to conclusions or judge you as much as most men do.”
