HyderabadThe protest against TD MLA Revanth Reddy’s release at the OU Arts College turned dangerous when a student’s clothes caught fire during the burning of an effigy. The student, Shiva Narayanan, escaped with burns on his face and shoulder as others quickly put out the flame.

The victim was treated at Gandhi Hospital and let off. The student group Girijana Vidyarthi Sangam said petrol accidentally spilled on Narayanan’s clothes and they caught fire.

Eyewitnesses said the victim, who studies at a private pharmaceutical college, came to OU on Wednesday for the protest. When students poured petrol on the effigy of Revanth Reddy, it fell on him.

“He ran for around 50 meters as the fire started spreading. Two others, who ran behind him helped him remove his shirt,” said a student who was at the spot. However, a part of his face and shoulder got burned. Local police and students took him to the hospital. Doctors said the burns were not serious.

Meanwhile, the OU student JAC and other students groups conducted protests against the release of Mr Revanth Reddy. The attempt by students to march to Cherlapally was foiled by the police, who barricaded the gate.
