Kozhikode: Mayor Prof A.K. Premajam has urged the zoological survey of India Western Ghat Regional Centre to play its role in preserving nature and the eco-system. Speaking  at  the inauguration of the centenary celebrations of the ZSI, she said the ZSI along with the regional science centre and planetarium were the major assets of the city. The corporation would  include  the both the institutions in the proposal to be submitted to the union government for the smart city tag.

“Scientific organisations should create an impact on  the public.  The people here know the Regional Science Centre  well  whereas the ZSI,  which has been  working here for the last thirty years,  couldn't make an impact,” she said. The ZSI can play a big role in preserving nature and the eco-system. “It is our duty to preserve our nature.  Institutions like the ZSI can be a front runner in this regard,” she added.

Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Northern Region) P.K. Keshavan, opined that the ZSI and Forest Department together could do a lot in preserving nature and its fauna. Regional Science Centre and Planetarium Director V.S. Ramachandran and  Thiruthiyad Ward councillor O.M. Bharadwaj were also  present.

The year-long centenary celebrations kickstarted with a ‘Centenary Run’ starting from its campus at Jaffar Khan Colony. School and college students, staff members of the regional centre and people participated in the run.
