ANANTAPUR: A farmer committed suicide at the Syndicate Bank branch premises in Uravakonda in the district on Thursday, after bank staff refused to renew his crop loan.

Sources said Kodanda Rami Reddy, 54, had applied for a crop loan along with renewal of previous loans on his agriculture land.

Sources said Syndicate Bank officials at Uravakonda had reportedly delayed the process.

Under pressure from private lenders from whom he had taken ‘hand loans’, Reddy went to the bank along with a pesticide bottle on Thursday morning. He approached the bank staff one final time.

When he could not make any headway, he consumed pesticide on the bank premises. He began vomiting soon after, and other farmers noticed the stench of pesticide.

They shifted him to a government hospital, but doctors said it was too late. Police recovered a suicide note from the farmer in which he accused bankers of refusing to issue fresh loans.

Uravakonda YSR Congress legislator Y. Visweswar Reddy who rushed to the spot and spoke with the farmer’s family members, held the state government responsible for the suicide of farmers due to its lack of clarity on the loan waiver scheme.

He threatened to launch an agitation across the state if the situation continued and demanded justice for the family members of Reddy. The police has registered a case on complaint by Reddy’s family.
