Hyderabad: The Panjagutta police has busted a major bike theft racket and has arrested a gang involved in thefts in Hyderabad and Cyberabad. The police arrested a seven-member gang on Friday and seized nine bikes worth nearly Rs 6 lakh from them.

Police said the prime accused Vemana Ayyappa, 21, is a resident of Yousufguda. He stopped education in Class X due to financial problems and started working as a paperboy in SR Nagar. He made friends with his neighbours Mahesh, Abhijit Chatterjee, Dora Babu, Venkatesh, Ravi Kumar and Sachin. They used to regularly visit Shiva Wines at SR Nagar and after consuming alcohol they play snooker at a snooker point, police said.

All the gang members were good bike riders and had a craze for high speed bikes. "They started stealing bikes a year ago. They used to focus on bikes parked in lonely areas. They unlock the bike with a duplicate key and later sell it cheaply," said Punjagutta ACP A. Venkateshwarlu. Police registered a case against the suspects and produced them before court.
