KOZHIKODE: CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury has criticised India’s  abstai-ning  from  voting on a resolution on Palestine adopted at the UN rights body on Friday.

"It reveals the Modi government’s pro-Israel agenda.  The change in the decades-long foreign policy is a curtain-raiser to  Modi’s Israel visit. India is the biggest arms buyer of the Jewish country now,” said  Mr Yechury. He was  delivering the fourth commemoration  speech of Chintha Ravi on ‘Reclaiming secular democracy: Need for new agenda’ at the Town Hall here on Saturday.

Fascist forces were trying to replace reason with unreason. “We have to win the battle of reason over unreason. The forces, which rule the country now,  are trying to replace Indian history by mythology and philosophy with Hindu theology,” he elaborated.  Equality cannot be attained without secularism and democracy, the CPM leader said.

He claimed that only the Left has a clear vision in fighting the sinister designs of fascist forces. “But without the people joining the Left progressive platform, it cannot be achieved. Advances in electoral politics alone would not bring about changes,” he added.

Professor Sunil P. Elayidam and Prof Hameed Chendaman-gallur also spoke on the occasion.   Chintha Ravi foundation chairman Sashi Kumar, writer Paul Zacharia,   N.K Raveendran and  Chelavur Venu among others were  present.
