Santiago: After having to face a shocking loss against Chile in the Copa America final, here on Sunday, the situation turned ugly for Argentine star striker Lionel Messi when his parents and two of his brothers had to be moved to safety after Chile fans attacked them.

Just before half-time at Estadio National, Messi’s oldest brother Rodrigo was hit by an object hurled by a fan. The incident was watched by his family from a television cabin in the stadium after security intervened, according to a report in ‘Daily Mail’. Messi’s relatives also had to bear the brunt of the loss after insults were hurled at them.

Chile won the high-voltage match 4-1 on penalties, ending their 99-year drought for the Copa America title.

Sergio Aguero's family were also allegedly abused by some Chilean supporters during the match. Messi's parents Celia and Jorge, his brothers Rodrigo and Matias hoped to see their son end Argentina's trophy drought.

Messi was also given rough treatment by Chile defenders, including Gary Medel.
