New Delhi: The issue of NRI voting has received a major push with the Centre informing the Supreme Court on Wednesday that a draft Bill on this issue was being submitted to the Union Cabinet which will allow them to cast their vote in Indian elections through proxy or an e-postal ballot system as suggested by the Election Commission.

Additional Solicitor-General P.S. Narasimha informed a three-judge bench of Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justices Arun Mishra and Amitav Roy said NRI voting had been specially added to the Bill along with other recommendations for armed forces personnel, government personnel posted out of India and their wives. The ASG told the bench that the government had accepted in principle the EC’s suggestion.
