HyderabadPiles of garbage lay strewn across the city’s roads as the strike by municipal staff entered its third day on Wednesday. Especially glaring was a huge pile of garbage sitting right next to the Marredpally police station. Top police officials have led their personnel in enthusiastically participating in the much publicised Swachh Hyderabad programme, but here the police have not done anything to clean up their own environs.

The vacant side adjacent the police station’ is swamped by garbage. The trash overflowing on to confiscated cars and bikes that are parked there. This pile of garbage is never cleared, even when the GHMC workers are not on strike.

Asked about the situation, West Marredpally inspector B. Ravindra Reddy said, “So far we have not been able to find out who has been dumping garbage near the police station. For this, we have installed a few cameras. A camera will be installed outside the premises soon.”

This is just a small part of an estimated 1,000 metric tons of garbage that has piled up on the city’s streets over the three days of the municipal strike. It would take a minimum of 48 hours to clean the city, officials said.

The city’s commercial hubs like Somajiguda, Panjagutta, Malkajgiri, the road from Nampally to Charminar, Abids and Koti have piles of garbage that have not been lifted from Monday.

The situation is the same in residential colonies. At some places, the garbage was set on fire. GHMC commissioner and special officer Somesh Kumar appealed to the unions to resume work immediately in the light of Ramzan and the oncoming Bonalu festivals and also the rainy season.

“The Chief Minister is very sympathetic to the request of sanitation workers and he will soon take decision,” he told the striking workers.
Mr Kumar said that during the Swachh Hyderabad programme, the Chief Minister had already assured that every care would be taken for the sanitation workers and the government would soon take a decision in this regard.

All deputy commissioners and zonal commissioners have been directed to make elaborate arrangements to get the garbage lifted in their jurisdiction. He said that Swachh teams, each with four workers and a vehicle, would take up sanitation work, he said.

Mr Kumar held a meeting with the the GHMEU recognised union along with Mr U. Gopal and other representatives and assured that all demands would be considered. He said the promotions for Class IV employees were in process. The issue of health cards  has to be settled by the state government, he said.
