Nilgiris leopard shifted to Vandalur zoo for treatment

Animal was transported in a medical jeep accompanied by with a team of six to eight people

Chennai: A three-year-old male leopard suffering from muscular and neurological problem was transported to Vandalur Zoo from Kundha forest range in the south of Nilgiris. “As of now it has been kept under observation. A team of three doctors are attending to it. There is no severe external injury. It is having a muscular and neurological problem hence we have started treatment orally,” said one of the veterinary officers.

The animal was in a serious condition when it was caught but has improved with treatment, he said adding that it has to be kept under observation. The leopard had strayed near human habitat and was caught on Sunday by forest officials after villagers informed officials about it The animal was transported in a medical jeep accompanied by a doctor, a ranger along with a team of six to eight people. During its journey to Chennai, the leopard wasn’t tranquilised.

Treatment of this neurological problem may take over a “After the treatment is completed then we will decide whether to leave it in the forest or keep it in zoo. The forest officials will have to decide if it has to be left in the forest,” the public relations officer said.
