Playschool syllabus to focus on cognitive skills

Chennai: The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) released the draft syllabus for play schools in the state on Wednesday. As per the draft syllabus, schools need to function from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm every day. The day is split into different sessions  prayer, warm up, circle time, free play (individual choice time), theme activity, potty time, music, dance/arts and outdoor play, ranging from 5 minutes to 30 minutes.

The child will be encouraged to listen, speak and sing songs, in the free play, activities like building blocks, matching pictures; jigsaw puzzles will be introduced to develop cognitive skills. Theme activities are designed in such a way as to enrich the vocabulary, listening skill, expressive skills, and interaction for concept formation.

The draft syllabus also makes sure that children learn about hygiene. As part of the potty time, children learn proper toilet habits, washing of hands and other hygienic practices.The SCERT has also come up with a concept of monthly theme for play school education, which includes fruits, vegetables, animals, transport, festivals, seasons, our friends and myself. The syllabus also has a format to assess kids’ performance.
