Two held for trying to rob ATM near Pallavaram
According to the suspect, there could have been a minimum of Rs18 lakh in ATM
Chennai: The city police caught two men trying to break open an ATM of SBI located at Balaji Nagar in Anakaputhur near Pallavaram in the wee hours of Thursday..One was inside the ATM, armed with an iron rod, cutting plier and screw driver trying to break open the machine while the other kept guard on a bike with the engine running. The duo had also broken a couple of streetlights to evade detection.
A Sankar Nagar patrol team, which was making a routine visit to the area around 2.30 am noticed a biker speeding away after seeing the patrol vehicle. Though he escaped, the cops zeroed in on him later. The police team noticed the presence of a man in the ATM kiosk, though there was no light. The two had also disabled the light inside the kiosk so that nothing could be seen in the CCTV footage.
The man inside the kiosk was wearing a mask. He was caught immediately. He was later identified as Sarath, 35, from the same locality. Based on his information, the police later nabbed John, 30, who had escaped on a motorcycle. On their information, the police are now on the look out for two more men involved in planning the crime.
The suspects told the police that they were watching ATM routines for some time and that the cash was filled in the ATM chest only on Wednesday. According to the suspect, there could have been a minimum of Rs18 lakh in the particular ATM on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, in another incident the police nabbed two men while they were trying to break in a grocery shop at Neelankarai on Wednesday night.
