Coimbatore: About 500 cadres staged an all party protest demanding speedy execution of work at the Textool bridge that has been hanging fire for the last three years now. The opposition parties have stated that if the Textool bridge is not completed, they would sit on dharna and lay siege to the Corporation Office and District Collectorate.

Being constructed at a cost of Rs 20 crore, the bridge was scheduled to be opened in May. The bridge, which would be 15 metres wide was getting delayed as railway work was in progress. Traffic has been an issue on the road for more than five years. When the Textool bridge project was announced, it was a big relief for the public of the area but as the work has not been completed yet, it is causing inconvenience to the students and the office-goers who get stuck due to the traffic snarls.

As work is in progress on the Gandhipuram flyover as well, the traffic gets diverted and causes a lot of accidents. “It takes just about 45 minutes to fly from Chennai to Coimbatore airport. But from the city airport to Textool it almost takes one and half hours”, said DMK Councillor Meena Logu who was also present at the protest.
