Bengaluru: Receiving lewd messages on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter has seen an increase with women being harassed, cheated and stalked by perverts.

In an incident of cyber stalking, a city-based woman was allegedly harassed on July 6 by a man who claimed to be a DJ in Mumbai. To teach her tormentor a lesson, the victim posted the DJ’s profile and the messages he had sent her on the public domain.

The suspect, Ashutosh Mishra, has sent foul messages from his profile, which is suspected to be fake. His messages read, “Sex Chat??? You have Sexy **(*(**.. You Look Sexy”, in reply to a post the woman had posted on a group called Put Me In Touch With Bangalore.

The victim, Anitha (name changed), a resident of M.S. Palya, was looking for help on the networking site as her mobile phone had developed a technical hitch. She had posted a query on the group. The victim told Deccan Chronicle, “As I am an active member on the group, I had posted the query. This man, who called himself Ashutosh Mishra, approached me and started sending inappropriate messages.”

When he didn’t stop despite repeated warnings, she decided to expose him and took snapshots of all the obscene messages he had sent her along with his profile and posted them on the group. “Yes! I could have easily ignored this issue by blocking him, but would that stop him from doing it to another girl or woman,” asked the victim.

“When I tried to extract his details, he in turn asked me, ‘Do you think I am a fool? You can’t do anything’. He claimed to work as a DJ in Mumbai, but said that he stays in Gujarat. When I asked him to send his photo, he sent one, but with a message that none of what he has said was true,” she said.

In her message on the public group, she has asked people to help her catch the pervert and report his lewd acts.

“I am not ashamed of sharing any detail as I feel the more we hold back, the more they exploit innocent people and fellow citizens,” said the victim, who has filed a complaint with city Cyber Crime Cell.

The IT City tops the charts in cyber crime and the Cyber Crime Cell  on an average receives around 40-45 complaints every day. Since 2013-2015, the cell has received over 600 complaints.
