Dispute escalates into riot, 19 arrested
Police have registered cases under various IPC sections while search is on for absconding persons
Coimbatore: The city police have arrested 19 persons and are on the lookout for 20 others who were involved in rioting in Ganapathy neighbourhood. Police said that a family dispute between two persons K. Gowtham (23) and N. Aravinthasamy (27), both hailing from Ganapthy escalated into violence on Sunday night.
At around 7 pm on Sunday, Gowtham accompanied by his friend Parthiban and 21 others had assembled at Ponaiyur street in Ganapathy and assaulted Aravinthsamy with wooden logs and sickle.
They also damaged his house and articles by pelting stones.
Based on a complaint by Aravinthasamy, police arrested nine persons including Gowtham and remanded them to custody. Meanwhile, acting on a counter complaint by Parthiban, 25, the police arrested and remanded ten persons for violence.
In his complaint, Parthiban said that 16 persons assembled in front of his house on Nadar street and pelted stones. They also assaulted him with logs and sickle. Based on his counter complaint, the police arrested ten persons and a search is on for others.
The Saravanampatty police have registered cases under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and 506 (ii) (threat to cause death) read with Section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act, 1992 on both the groups of people. A search is on for absconding persons.
