Vijayawada: The liquor outlets run by the state excise department, an attempt to put an end to MRP violation by local traders, seems to be doing dull business since the beginning. The new state excise policy is being implemented from July 1 where 10 per cent of the existing number of shops were taken and run by government.
As part of it, of all 335 licenced shops in the district, 33 shops are allotted for the excise department at prominent locations, that is, amidst the cluster of existing wine shops in mandal headquarters. However, though MRP violation by private traders came down to an extent, the government liquor shops are just registering nominal sale.
While a private shop sells over Rs 80,000 worth liquor a day in Vyyuru, the government liquor shop in the same area is selling Rs 10,000 worth liquor each day. Similarly, government shops in Vijayawada and other important mandals too are making low business than expected by the excise department.
It is said that private liquor shops formed into a syndicate to avoid people from going to the excise department’s shops. Also, lack of sale of items like water, loose liquor, room to consume liquor and others is keeping tipplers away from the government outlets. However, the excise officials hope that violation of MRP can be controlled with the government’s initiative.
