Hyderabad: A temple priest allegedly killed his 38-year-old cousin and hid the body for more than a year in a septic tank on the temple premises at Kanapur. Pavan Joshi, 40, killed his cousin Mohan Vyas by hitting him with a hammer on the head in March 2014, and dumped the body in the septic tank. Following a complaint from the victim’s mother, the Narsingi police investigated the case and found the body.
After the arrest Pavan confessed that he had killed Mohan as he pestered him for money. Pavan confessed that he killed Mohan on the midnight of March 21, 2014, and had hid the incident from his family. The murder took place in a room near the Hanuman Temple where Pavan had been a priest.
“Pavan hit Mohan with a hammer on the head. The victim became unconscious and later succumbed. As construction of the septic tank was going on Pavan hid the body there. Next day, he called two of his aides, and made them finish work on the tank,” said inspector R. Ramacha-ndra Rao. The two came to know about the body, but hid the information.
Pavan choose the septic tank to hide the body as he thought that was the safest. He also erased all other evidence. “Mohan was addicted to alcohol and used to live with Pavan. He used to ask for money after getting drunk. This led to the murder,” said the inspector. Since Mohan never used to come home regularly his mother Lakshmi Vyas did not look for him for several months. Later, she lodged a missing complaint. Despite Pavan concealing evidence and trying to escape the probe by making up stories about the disappearance of Mohan, the police finally recovered the skeleton from the septic tank.
Pavan was booked for murder and for concealing evidence. He has been sent to judicial remand by the police.
