VijayawadaWith the first monsoon downpour in the city a couple of weeks ago, Vijayawada mayor Koneru Sridhar and municipal commissioner G. Veerapandian started visiting various areas of the city, asking officials to clear drains clogged with silt on a war footing basis, as it's the only means to solve the problem of inundation of the city.

The city shot to prominence post-bifurcation and as a result a lot of activity has picked up pace.
The Chief Minister's camp office has come up in the city and soon several ministers and state-level offices are about to shift to the city too. However, the drainage and roads in the city continue to remain in a poor shape.

While the municipal authorities have taken up the task of clearing the silt in the drains, the roads continue to be commuters' nightmare with the drains overflowing on to them.
Wednesday night's heavy rainfall once again inundated roads and drains overflowed. Motorists and pedestrians had to drive or wade through the overflowing stinking drain water to reach their destinations.

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation officials, a month ago, identified over 30 major and 200 minor drains that need immediate desilting. Over 300 sanitation workers were roped in to complete the de-silting works as soon as possible and the city mayor has been closely following up the progress.
However, roads still continue to get waterlogged with rainwater unable to find a way out through the drains.

As many as 30 major and 200 minor drains have been identified for desilting works. The corporation has roped in 200 people, including 90 private workers, to carry out the works taken up at a cost of over Rs 1 crore.

Of the 30 drains, desilting of 25 has already been completed and the rest would be done within a few days, according to municipal officials. Non-functioning drains in I-town, MG Road, Eluru Road, Autonagar, Moghalrajpuram, Siddharta Nagar, ITI Road, Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road and others, get water logged even on account of moderate rains.
