Hyderabad: Six-year-old B. Charan, whose heart had been pierced with a pencil, was discharged from Maxcure Hospitals on Thursday. He has fully recovered and will only have to come for follow-up checks, said doctors.

Looking at Charan, one wouldn’t know that the playful child underwent such a traumatic experience recently.

He has undergone physiotherapy for blowing, deep breathing exercises and ambulation to which he responded well. He has also been recommended a regular and nutritious diet to regain his strength.

Chief cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon Dr Sameer Diwale said, “The response system of children is amazing as they do not recall the trauma, hence their mental baggage is not there. The body heals well when the mind is free of worry and tension. Yet, as it was an open surgery, we will be following him up for a year.”

He has been advised to take necessary precautions like not to lie on his stomach and to avoid strenuous activities like running, jumping, skipping etc. for four weeks.

As a precaution, his mother Sirisha said, “We will not send him to school for a month as this incident has really scared us.”
