Thiruvananthapuram: As a prelude to the arrival of a four-member delegation led by Gautam Adani’s son Karan who is also the executive director of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone on Monday to discuss further steps on the Vizhinjam International Seaport, Union shipping secretary Rajeev Kumar had a field visit to the Vizhinjam port site on Saturday.
Mr Kumar during his visit made it clear that the decision on cabotage relaxations to the project was under the active consideration of the Central government. Both the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and ports minister K. Babu had earlier written to the Centre seeking waivers in cabotage provisions.
Mr Babu had made it clear that another letter will be sent soon to the Centre in this regard. The four-member delegation headed by Karan Adani will hold discussions with the chief minister in his Assembly complex chamber at 12 noon.
The dates for signing the agreement and the construction launch ceremony are likely to finalised at the meeting, after which Mr Adani is likely to visit the project site along with officials.
The visit by Mr Adani was a follow-up of the state government submitting the letter of award to Adanis expressing willingness to award the contract for construction of the transshipment terminal. Earlier, Mr Kumar during the visit to Vizhinjam pointed out that apart from Vizhinjam, Cola-chel was also under the consideration of the Central government as an alternate site.
Mr Kumar also visited Kulachal after Vizhinjam. Union MoS for shipping, road transport and highways Pon Radhakrishnan, is in the forefront of the campaign for the port in the neighbouring Kanyakumari district.
