Chennai: The state government on Monday filed a defamation complaint against the editor and printer of a Tamil bi-weekly, Junior Vikatan, for publishing a malicious news item in its latest
edition against finance and public works minister O. Panneerselvam. On behalf of Panneerselvam, city public prosecutor M.L.Jegan has filed the complaint, before the principal sessions court here.
The complainant said that editor and publisher P. Thirumavelan and printer of ‘Junior Vikatan’ S. Madhavan published a news item in the July 19 issue which defamed Panneerselvam.
The article contained malicious defamatory statements attributable to him. This was published with an intent to harm his reputation. The contents mentioned in the news items were false. The editor and printer were liable for prosecution for an offence under Section 499 IPC.
CEO of news portal summoned: Meanwhile, principal sessions court judge, N. Authinathan, has summoned the chief executive officer cum chairman, Ajith Balakrishnan, editor-in-chief Nikil Lakshman, senior associate editor Abhishek Mande and reporter R. Ramasubramanian, to appear before the court on August 26 in connection with a defamation case against them for publishing a news item in Rediff.com news portal. Recently, the portal had made allegations about the health condition of the Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
