Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Monday decided to constitute state and district-level committees to identify and protect heritage structures. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao directed officials to draft a new policy to protect heritage structures and said the existing document was “incomplete.” He asked officials to explore the option of amending the Heritage Act, if need be, for the purpose. He said several structures including the Legislative Assembly and buildings in the districts were not given heritage status, which should be rectified now. The Chief Minister would head the state-level committee with the chief secretary as the vice-chairman and the principal secretaries of municipal, panchayat raj, revenue and tourism departments as members.
The district-level committees will have the collector as chairman, besides the SP, joint collector and officials of the relevant departments as members. In Hyderabad, the GHMC commissioner would head the committee to identify heritage structures. Mr Rao on Monday held a review meeting at his camp office with senior officials to discuss about identifying heritage structures holding historical importance, the methods to be adopted for the purpose and the steps that need to be taken for their protection.
