Even as the film continues to set box office records, there have also been some controversies about the depiction of Indo-Pak relations in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. But Salman Khan does not believe that the film has any offensive material.
“I don’t think that BB has offended anyone’s sentiments. We’ve been extremely cautious about respecting both Pakistan and India,” says Salman.
The superstar says that he is upset with opportunists who have been using his film to play political games. “Cinema is a medium that can possibly make amends between the two countries. It’s disheartening when a sincere effort is used instead to create rifts. People with good intentions will find no religious or political faults in Bajrangi Bhaijaan,” he asserts.
Salman recalls that his first brush with Pakistani cinema was at the start of his career. “Years ago, I had done a film called Sanam Bewafa that was a remake of a Pakistani film, Haque Meher. People still remember that film because of the story,” he says. When reminded that certain jingoistic Bollywood films did play a part in fostering the animosity between the Indian and Pakistani film industries, Salman says, “I can’t comment on other actors’ films based on Pakistan. The two films that I’ve done — Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan — have shown Pakistan and India in the right light. I have a huge fan following in Pakistan and I wouldn’t want to hurt them by disrespecting their sentiments. I want to go to Pakistan and I want to work out a strategy that allows their actors to (perform) in our country without being judged.”
