Despite having a filmy background (his father is AL Azhagappan the veteran producer and brother is AL Vijay, a well-known filmmaker) Udhaya has been struggling to make place for himself in the Tamil film industry. The actor has still not lost hope, and is all set with his new film Aavi Kumar (AK), which he says is a big release for him.

“Aavi Kumar is releasing in 170 screens this Friday. I am confident that this horror-comedy will be lapped up by audiences and give me a big break. In fact, AK was ready six months ago. But small budget films are not getting theatres for their release in K’town. Although they have already been working on this for some time, I am making another humble request to the Tamil Film Producers Council to regulate this as early as possible,” Udhaya says.

About his film, he says, “AK is not a pure horror which would frighten you. It has good dose of comedy post interval and family audiences especially kids would love it. I play the titular role of Aavi Kumar, a spirit medium, who speaks to ghosts, and the character has been inspired by a real life personality Aavi Amudha.”

Kanika Tiwari who played Hrithik Roshan’s kid sister in Agneepath is debuting as his heroine. Quiz him on the huge time lag between his film releases, Udhaya says, “Some films including Kaadhal Jadhi which I felt were excellent, got jinxed due to financial constraints. I have learnt a lot from my past experiences.  I even produced Ra Ra which also taught me a big lesson. Now, I am careful and have resolved to give at least two films in a year.”

The actor says that he would never go to his brother Vijay and ask for a chance. “Vijay is doing films with stars like Vijay and Ajith. I do not want to ask for a role in his films. When I grow big, perhaps he himself will cast me in his films. I did a small character in Thalaivaa directed by my brother as it had prominence.” Udhaya is also wrapping up his next which is titled Uttharavu Maharaja.
