Coimbatore: Following a spate of protests by the full time Ph.D scholars, the Bharatiyar University has scrapped the controversial category-B — Ph.D programme, which is a distance education mode of doctoral programme.
Over 4,000 scholars have taken up Ph.D under category B under distance education mode. In the wake of protests from full-time Ph.D scholars, the university formed a 10-member committee comprising the heads of a few departments to look into the issue. The committee submitted a report to the registrar Senthil Vasan based on, which Senthil Vasan, announced on Wednesday that the university was scrapping the category-B Ph.D with effect from July 2015.
The main objection of the full-time scholars was that the Ph.D students on distance education mode were being treated on par with the full timers who spend all the time in their labs researching their projects. “There is no difference between the full timers and those doing doctorate under the distance education mode as the certificate given to them does not mention category-B,” said a full-time Ph.D scholar
The protestors also said that in category-B the candidate could select a guide who was not working in the university or, from colleges not affiliated to the university. The category-B Ph.D was started by the university about seven years ago.
