HyderabadThe two-bin policy for garbage segregation at source is ready to start in Greater Hyderabad. The municipal administration and urban development department passed a government order on Wednesday making it mandatory for segregation of dry municipal solid waste (non-biodegradable/recyclable waste) and wet MSW (bio-degradable waste) at source, i.e. the household level.

The order stated that this was mandatory as per the Municipal Solid Rules, 2000 and the orders of the National Green Tribunal, New Delhi and orders of the High Court.

The state government has sanctioned Rs 41.40 crore towards procurement of bins.

As per the draft Municipal Solid Waste Rules, 2014, wet waste should be collected in green bins and dry waste in blue bins. Bins of 12-15 litre capacity has been proposed for a family of five members.

GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar said that based on the data of number of households — 19,57,585 — as per the household survey conducted last year, 44,04,568 bins will be procured, including 12.5 per cent extra bins as standby.

Based on the lowest quote of Rs 94 per bin, the total cost works out to Rs 41,40,29,392, which the government released on Wednesday.
