Government announces Onam bonanza for BPL families
The government also sanctioned Rs 64 crore for civil supplies department
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cabinet on Wednesday announced free Onam kits to all BPL families and one kg sugar each at subsidised rates to all 83 lakh ration card holders in the state besides steps for market intervention to check prices of essential commodities during festival season.
At the Cabinet briefing Chief Minister Mr Oommen Chandy said that civil supplies department will provide 20 lakh Onam kits to BPL families.
Besides, 25 lakh students would be given 5 kg rice each and each tribal family would be given 15 kg rice and eight types of provisions as part of Onam.
Each kit for tribal families would cost Rs 687.43 and Rs 10.41 crore would be granted to civil supplies department from chief minister’s relief fund.
The government also sanctioned Rs 64 crore for civil supplies department, Rs 25 crore for consumer fed and Rs 7 crore horticorp in view of the ensuring festival season.
The government directed these departments to initiate tender process for procuring essential commodities required to meet Onam festival demand.
