Hyderabad: The suicide of B.Arch student Rushikeswari following ragging in Guntur brings to the fore the problem of parents not being pro-active when their children complain to them about being harassed in college.
Mr T. Kishan Kumar Reddy, rector at JNTU Hyderabad, said, “The problem with parents in India is that they put the entire burden on the teaching faculty of the college. There are hundreds of students and it is not possible to understand the personal problems of all... By sending their children to college their responsibility is not over.”
Senior advocate Bhaskar Laxmi said that parents of girls are scared to complain beca-use of the effect it might have on their future. She said, “Parents are afraid to fight against any complaints of sexual harassment as they feel that it will lead to pointing fingers back at them. But it is high time that they understand that their girls are going to institutions where they must retort and not take matters lightly. A single raised voice gives many the confidence to come out and speak,” she said.
Psychology professor Pragya Rashmi said, “Parents prefer to live in denial. This is the wrong method to deal with the problem. They have to accept that such things can happen and must not blame the girl for it. This too is a wrong method. The fault may not be in her but in the others who are harassing her.”
