Hyderabad: A mere teenager, she bore it stoically for a long time, the caning, the branding, and the humiliation. And when it became too much, she decided to act.

Mustering courage she tipped off a neighbour about her abusive cousin and his wife who heaped indignities on her. Soon after, the 18-year-old was rescued from Telecom Colony under Neredmet police station limits.

Bhavani lost her parents in 2008, following which some of her relatives admitted her in an orphanage, but was soon taken out from there by a cousin.

“Her cousin, Srinivasa Rao, took her home assuring that he will get her enrolled in a school and provide care. Instead, he made her slog ceaselessly. Soon after that, his wife Laxmi started torturing the girl,” said the investigating officer from the Neredmet PS. He added that a case of harassment and illegal confinement will be lodged against the accused.

Bhavani has branding on her chest, abdomen, and thighs. She was beaten up brutally and subjected to other severe punishment by the cousin’s wife said the cops.

“Seeing that her cousin and his wife had gone to Pushkaralu and would not return for a few days, Bhavani tipped off a person from her colony who had read about the recent Prathyusha case. They called us up and we took up a rescue operation with the help of the Neredmet police and Balala Hakkula Sangham,” said Achyuta Rao, member State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR).

Currently, Bhavani has been placed in a private hospital for treatment so that the injuries don’t catch infection. She has been provided police protection.
