New Delhi: After agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh’s written reply in Parliament to questions on farmer suicides created a controversy over listing love affairs and impotency among other reasons, the BJP said the minister’s speech was misinterpreted.

Coming to the rescue of his Cabinet colleague, who is facing the Opposition’s ire over the “insensitive” statement, Union finance minister Arun Jaitley attached four similar replies given during the UPA government between March 2012 and February 2014 on his Facebook page .

“Love affair” was highlighted in the list of reasons given by then minister of state for agriculture and food processing industries Charan Das Mahant to the Rajya Sabha on March 30, 2012.

The other reply attached was that of then agriculture minister Sharad Pawar given to the Lok Sabha on February 2, 2013, highlighting “love affair”, besides unemployment, property dispute, bankruptcy or poverty, career problem etc.
