Mumbai: Mumbai Cricket Association is relieved after a trial court in Delhi dropped spot-fixing charges against its former cricketer Ankeet Chavan along with S. Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila.
The MCA, which is one of the domestic powerhouses having won Ranji Trophy titles for a record 40 times, suffered a setback when Chavan was banned by the BCCI two years ago.
“Ankeet has come out clean. The ban had come from BCCI and it is now up to the Board to decide on it. Once he gets clearance from BCCI, I don’t think there will be a stumbling block in Chavan playing for the state,” Dalal said of the 29-year-old.
The allegations of spot-fixing against “calm and well behaved” Chavan had surprised his coaches and teammates along with the office bearers in the MCA. “It is good he has been cleared but the taint may remain which is very bad,” Dalal said.
Meanwhile, there were celebrations at Chavan’s household. His house erupted in joy on Saturday after the court’s verdict. Chavan’s wife and parents were busy distributing sweets.
