Ask Vir Das what his taste in music is like, and he says, “musical, but not overproduced”. In a chat with us, Vir recounts his early (and awkward) attempts at singing Gun N’ Roses’ Sweet Child of Mine, and more…

The one song on repeat on my iPod these days: Hold On by Alabama Shakes

If I had to put together a ‘soundtrack’ for my life, the five songs on it would be:
Tubthumping by Chumbawumba, because I’m resilient, Let’s Get It On by Martin Gaye, because I’m mischievous, Thunderstruck by ACDC because that’s the entry music to my shows, Best Of You by Foo Fighters because I’m a gullible romantic and It’s All Right It’s Ok by my band Alien Chutney — because it really is all going to be okay.

What I listen to when:
I’m happy — Treasure by Bruno Mars. Great fun, getting-ready-to-go-out music.
I’m really low — Nothing’s Real But Love by Rebecca Ferguson.
I’m working out — Jazz. Miles Davis or Charlie Parker.

Music I loved as a teenager that I’m now embarrassed by: Guns N’ Roses was my Beatles. I was in a band and used to sing Sweet Child Of Mine at concerts. Now I’m embarrassed by how badly I sang it!

My favourite time/way to listen to music during the day: All day long — I probably listen to music for six hours a day. While waking up, getting ready, driving, eating...

If I could have one band in the world/a musician perform a private concert for me, it would it be: One Direction. So I could lock them up in that room for a while!

And the one live act I would love to see at least once: Red Hot Chilli Peppers — still waiting on that one...
