Hyderabad: At least five housewives commit suicide every day in TS and AP. 1,794 housewives ended lives in these two states last year, says the National Crime Record Bureau. Loneliness, domestic violence, pressure of household duties, kids and elderly persons and lack of professional help to tackle depression, led to these suicides, say experts. Suicide trend is increasing among housewives irrespective of socio-economic class.
As per NCRB data, government employees have the least number of suicides, while suicides among private sector employees are higher. The NCRB divides suicides into 10 categories — housewife, service (government), service (private), PSU, student, unemployed, business, farming, retired and others.
Experts say that a significant percentage of women, who remain at home while husband and kids go out start developing emotional problems. “When any dispute occurs men go out and distress. However, housewives are stuck at houses. They might take impulsive decisions when they are stressed. Most housewives cannot seek professional help when they are suicidal,” said Ms. V. Pathmavathi, Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee, RR district.
