HyderabadThe Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) has teeth but does not use them. Two cases which came up for hearing at the TSPCB’s zonal office at Begumpet recently are examples of this policy.

One is a bone crushing unit located at Pudur near Vikarabad which had been creating problems with its stink. When TSPCB officials went for inspections they found that the unit has unlicensed refrigeration facilities too. However, on the day of inspection the refrigeration unit was not being used and TSPCB officials dropped the matter. It was also found that cattle skeletons were not disposed off properly. There are also allegations that the bone powder is being used to make edible oil and for making poultry feed.

The second case was from Kamanpur where farmland is being destroyed by a parboiled rice mill of Aditya Agro Industries run without permits. A notice was issued in May by TSPCB but there was no response.

One of the complainants said, “TSPCB officials told us to let the issue go as the mill owners have political backing. Is this what they are expected to do?”
