OotyFormer President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who passed away on Monday, had many facets to himself.

The world knows about his passion for science and technology but he was equally passionate about art and paintings, M. Ravichandran, artist at the Government Art Galley said.

Ravichandran had taken part in an art exhibition held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in January 2007, inaugurated by Dr Kalam, the country’s President then.

“Dr Kalam approached the exhibition not with a President’s mindset but very much like an artist. He asked minute details about the art and expressed his views and suggestions,” he said.
Ravichandran’s exhibits were modern art based on tribal life. “He observed my work keenly and asked me details about the theme and how tribal life inspired me,” he said.

Dr Kalam also said that artists should always be positive so that their minds are calm to allow them to think creatively.

What is heartening to note that he opened up the Rashtrapati Bhavan for artists and interacted with the artists.

“My meeting with him will always be etched in my memory.”
