Vijayawada: In wake of the ragging incident that allegedly led to suicide of a student in Acharya Nagarjuna University, city police restored anti-ragging campaigns in colleges in the limits of police commissionerate to ensure no further ragging occurs.
To make sure students are aware of The Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Ragging Act and Anti Ragging Guidelines issued by the Central government, police has started conducting awareness campaigns in city colleges.
All station house officers have been instructed to conduct necessary campaigns in the colleges and explain the consequences of being caught for ragging juniors in the colleges.
There are over 50 major colleges in the city and majority of them are engineering colleges, reportedly more prone to ragging incidents.
“Following the anti-ragging guidelines, all the colleges are publicising the acts and punishments that attract ragging cases. However, to create more awareness, campaigns will be conducted in colleges where police interact with students,” said a senior police official.
As per Ragging Prohibition Act, students’ accused of ragging can be punished for a term of six months to life depending on crime. All colleges are collecting affidavits from students and their parents as per the anti-ragging Guidelines. Anti Ragging committees are also being formed in colleges.

Jagan tweets his displeasure:
YSR Congress chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy condemned the way the government was tackling the suicide case of Rishiteswari, student of Acharya Nagarjuna University, in his tweet.
Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy’s tweet reads: “Despite a clear suicide note in Rishiteshwari case its painful & agonising to see that the ghastly incident finds its way into cold storage”. Mr Jagan mohan Reddy criticised the government for finding excuses to put the case on a backburner instead of delivering justice to the student’s parents.
Students in the university staged protest and demanded justice to Rishiteswari on Wednesday as the fact finding committee visited the university for further enquiry into the case.
